Green by Design: Building a Sustainable Culture at Flipkart Headquarters

The Flipkart headquarters at the ETV (Embassy Tech Village) Campus, Bengaluru, which is over 7 years old, has been steadily transformed into a model of operational sustainability, earning the Platinum rating in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in Operations and Maintenance (O+M) from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a private, non-profit organization established in 1993 that is dedicated to promoting sustainability in how buildings are designed, built, and operated.

They are most famous for creating and administering LEED, the world’s most widely used green building rating system.

This recognition reflects the day-to-day choices that enable a workplace to function with greater efficiency, responsibility, and intent. Employees experience and actively contribute to a workplace that works to reduce its environmental impact. This progress takes shape through everyday choices made by all of its 12000 employees, as the workplace enables greener habits through both infrastructure and culture.

Discover how eco-conscious practices are embedded into everyday operations at the Flipkart headquarters.

Laying a Sustainable Foundation

Flipkart’s path to LEED Platinum began with process discipline. The successful completion of the ISO 41001:2018, issued by BQSR (Business Quality & System Registrar), for Facilities Management Systems established a global standard for the organization. This milestone ensured the structured, sustainable operations required to meet the highest levels of LEED certification readiness.

The Flipkart headquarters already includes efficiency-oriented design elements, such as workstations positioned near glass façades to maximize natural daylight and reduce dependence on artificial lighting. However, sustainability depends not only on design, but on real-time building performance.

The Operations + Maintenance (O+M) category under LEED focuses on this: measuring ongoing energy use, water consumption, waste management, and indoor environmental quality. To meet Platinum expectations, the air conditioning system also undergoes operational optimization.

Flipkart integrates a 75F IoT-based solution that adjusts cooling based on occupancy and heat loads detected through infrared sensors. This reduces energy use while improving comfort, including preventing over-cooled meeting rooms during low occupancy.

Powering Progress: Renewable Energy and Efficiency

In calendar year 2025, Flipkart helped save 100k units (kWh) of electricity compared to calendar year 2024. At the Flipkart headquarters, the energy system runs on a mix of efficiency and clean power. A portion of electricity demand is met through the campus’s 100 MW solar power plant in Ballari, Karnataka, transmitted through a grid to the ETV office.

Energy efficiency, however, extends beyond renewable sourcing. Cooling operations have been optimized through a default AC thermostat setting of 23°C/23.5°C. This small shift is expected to yield meaningful savings while maintaining workplace comfort.

Additionally, certification-led interventions have helped avoid over 640,000 kg (640 tonnes) of CO₂ emissions in 2024 and 2025.

Water Wisdom: Conservation in Every Drop

Water remains a critical resource in any large campus ecosystem, and at the Flipkart headquarters, conservation sits at the core of daily operations. The facility includes a 300 KL (kilolitre) rainwater storage tank, where harvested water is treated, stored, and reused for domestic purposes, while also supporting systems such as the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).

Wastewater management is strengthened through a common STP with a capacity of 1,000 KLD (kilolitres per day), which serves all 12 blocks in the campus. The STP recycles wastewater for urinals and WC flushing, reducing dependence on fresh water sources and enabling wastewater recycling of up to 60%.

To make consumption more efficient at the point of use, the Flipkart HQ also uses low-flow aerators on all taps. These fixtures control flow without compromising usability. This helps reduce water wastage in high-footfall areas such as washrooms and pantry zones.

Waste Not: A Zero-Waste Mindset

The Flipkart HQ operates as a zero-waste site. Wet waste is composted, and dry waste is sorted and recycled.

Over the last eight months, the site maintains zero waste to landfill, diverting over 400 tonnes. Daily waste generation also reduced significantly, from ~900 kg/day to under 400 kg/day, supported by operational policies such as mandatory reusable cutlery and crockery across pantries and the tuck shops.

This approach extends to procurement and material choices too. Even tea bag sourcing aligns with composting requirements, with staple pin-free tea bags preferred to avoid metal contamination.

Reinforcing employee participation is an initiative called ‘Trashy No More’. This mandatory training program helps new joiners learn about waste segregation and eco-friendly disposal practices. Collectively, these measures preserve resources at scale, including 4,095 m³ of landfill space saved.

Employee Engagement: The Heartbeat of Change

Sustainability at the Flipkart HQ extends beyond infrastructure. It also shapes how employees move, work, and participate every day. To support greener commutes, the campus includes EV charging stations with 40 industrial sockets along with designated cycle parking zones.

To create a safer and healthier environment, the company has opted for herbal and non-chemical pest control methods, avoiding harsh synthetics that could harm people or the planet.

Similarly, all cleaning and housekeeping rely exclusively on Green Seal-certified chemicals, a deliberate decision to keep indoor air fresh and free from toxins while minimizing environmental impact.

Employee engagement keeps these practices consistent, and the campus supports it through small, practical changes across daily operations. For example:

● ‘Trashy No More’ builds sustainability awareness from day one

● RO (Reverse Osmosis) water feeds coffee/tea machines to cut packaged water

● Hand dryers replace paper towels to reduce waste

Greener Today and Tomorrow

Sustainability at the Flipkart headquarters is embedded in the daily systems that keep the campus running. This includes how energy is sourced and saved, how water is reused, and how waste is managed. It also includes the way employees are enabled to commute and work more responsibly.

The LEED Platinum rating reflects this progress. More importantly, it highlights the discipline of sustaining performance year after year. As the headquarters continues to measure outcomes, the focus shifts to strengthening what already works and expanding what can scale. This includes sharper monitoring of energy and water use, and continued improvements in facility operations. Employee participation remains a key part of this journey.
